PhD Positions Starting January 2027: What's Still Open and How to Apply in Time

January PhD starts are real but tight: most UK studentship deadlines for a January start closed in October, and visa processing eats four to six weeks. Here is what is genuinely still open —

PhD Positions Starting January 2027: What's Still Open and How to Apply in Time

Not every PhD starts in October. In the UK, roughly one intake in five starts in January, and across continental Europe many positions start on a rolling basis — whenever the supervisor's grant needs someone. But if you are reading this in late October 2026, the honest position is: the January 2027 UK window is nearly closed, while the European and self-arranged routes are still wide open.

Why January starts are different

A January start is usually one of three things:

  • A second intake some UK doctoral programmes run for candidates who missed the autumn deadline (applications typically closed in October 2026)
  • A position tied to a grant start date — a supervisor's funded project begins in January, so the position advertises in September–November
  • A rolling-start European position — German, Dutch, Scandinavian and Swiss PhD jobs start any month, often with just 2–3 months from offer to desk

The timeline maths (count backwards)

For a January 2027 start you need, roughly:

  • Offer in hand by mid-November 2026 — UK universities need time to issue the CAS after you accept
  • Visa: 3 weeks typical, 6 weeks worst case — the student visa priority window plus ATAS clearance for science and engineering courses, which alone can take weeks (see our ATAS processing guide)
  • Accommodation and travel — December is the worst month to arrange either

If you do not already hold an offer, a January 2027 UK start is realistic only for rolling-admission programmes. For everyone else, the practical targets are April 2027 second-intake starts and September/October 2027 — the main event, whose funding deadlines cluster between December 2026 and March 2027.

What is actually open right now

Positions genuinely still recruiting for winter/spring starts fall into clear buckets:

  1. Funded projects with January/February 2027 start dates — UK and EU supervisors whose grants started in late 2026 advertise on jobs sites and our listings; a project with a fixed start date usually interviews within 4–6 weeks of advertising.
  2. European rolling positions — the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland hire PhD candidates as staff with a notice period, so a December offer can mean a spring desk. Start from our choosing-a-country guide.
  3. Self-arranged PhDs — where you bring your own funding or a scholarship (Commonwealth, national awards), the university's start dates are far more flexible; see what self-funded really means.

The scholarship calendar still in your favour

Several major scholarships have deadlines that work perfectly for 2027 entry even now:

  • Eiffel (France) — institutional nomination by 6 January 2027
  • Stipendium Hungaricum — 15 January 2027 for autumn 2027 entry
  • CEU doctoral — 15 January 2027, with the €2,002/month stipend
  • UCL EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Awards — 8 January 2027 for UK-funded PhD places
  • Axel Adler / Swedish admissions — 15 January 2027 study deadline, scholarship round in February–March

These are degree-entry scholarships rather than January starts — but they are the deadlines that matter for most applicants reading this in November.

What to do this week

  1. Filter our closing-soon listings for deadlines in the next 8 weeks — that is your realistic January window.
  2. Prepare the universal application pack (CV, transcripts, references) using our academic CV guide — it is the same pack for every application.
  3. Email three rolling-start European groups in your field this week; two of them will still be recruiting in December.
  4. Bookmark the main October 2027 deadlines now and work backwards with our 12-month application plan.

How to run a January-start search in 30 minutes

  1. Filter by deadline, not start date: on the NextApply opportunities page, sort by deadline and take everything closing in the next 90 days — most funded positions with winter starts hide there.
  2. Check the deadline hubs: our month pages (November, December, January) collect every closing call per month.
  3. Read the start-date line in each listing: European employed positions negotiate starts; if the ad says "start date flexible", ask for January in your cover letter (our cover letter sample shows where).
  4. Contact supervisors now: for professor-led positions, a November email can lock a January start — see how to find supervisor contacts.

Questions applicants often ask

Is January a bad intake? In Europe it is simply a second intake — cohort activities may run September-first but funding and supervision are identical.

Visa timing? Winter starts mean visa applications land in the holiday slowdown (mid-December to early January) — file within days of your offer, and see our UK student visa guide if the host is Britain.

Missed everything? The same cycle repeats: use our 12-month application timeline to plan a September 2027 start instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still start a PhD in January 2027?

Only in specific cases: funded projects that are still advertising with a fixed winter start date, rolling-start European positions (Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, Switzerland), or self-arranged PhDs where you bring funding. Most UK studentship routes for a January 2027 start closed their applications in October 2026 — for those, the realistic targets are April 2027 second intakes and September/October 2027.

When should I apply for a January 2027 PhD start?

Ideally August–September 2026, and no later than mid-October: you need the offer by early-to-mid November, then 3–6 weeks for the CAS, student visa and ATAS clearance where it applies. If you are reading this after those dates, pivot to positions still advertising with winter start dates or to rolling European starts.

Which countries allow PhD starts in January?

The UK runs January intakes on many doctoral programmes; Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Switzerland hire PhD candidates year-round as staff, so January (or any month) starts are normal there; Australia and New Zealand also commonly start candidates in Semester 1 (February).

How long does the UK student visa take for a January start?

Plan 3 weeks from CAS to visa decision in the normal service, 6 weeks worst case — plus ATAS clearance (science and engineering) which can add several weeks and must complete before the CAS. Working backwards from a January start, you want the CAS in hand by early December.
