Robotics PhD in Europe: Live Positions, Salaries and How to Apply

Robotics doctoral positions in Europe are almost always salaried jobs: you join a lab as a research employee, keep your IP for publications, and work on projects funded by EU schemes or national councils. NextApply currently tracks 30+ live robotics positions across the continent — this guide breaks down where they are, what they pay, and how to build an application that wins them.

Where the robotics PhD positions are

Of the live robotics-tagged positions on NextApply, the distribution by host country looks like this:

The UK leads on volume thanks to its Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) system, which recruits cohorts into robotics and AI programmes every year. Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands follow with institute positions that are individually advertised but equally well paid.

What robotics labs actually screen for

  • Hands-on evidence: a robot you built, a ROS stack you maintain, simulation work (Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, Gazebo) — our robotics portfolio guide shows how to package projects.
  • Maths and theory base: control theory, kinematics, estimation, and increasingly ML — be ready to discuss one in depth.
  • A research direction: labs want candidates who know which sub-field they want (see current research topic list), not general robotics enthusiasm.
  • Publications help but are optional — many hired candidates have none; a strong GitHub and thesis matter more (see PhD without publications).

How to apply: the mechanics

  1. CDTs (UK): one application to the centre, cohort start each autumn, interviews in spring — a research proposal is usually developed after admission.
  2. Employed positions (DE/NL/CH/SE): apply to the specific vacancy with a CV, transcript, statement and 2 references; interviews include a technical talk or paper discussion.
  3. MSCA doctoral networks: positions inside EU networks are published year-round on the EU portal — our MSCA Doctoral Networks guide explains allowances and eligibility.

Questions applicants often ask

Do I need a robotics master's? Not always — strong CS, EE or mechanical candidates are routinely admitted; check country rules in PhD without a master's.

Is ROS experience mandatory? For most systems labs, effectively yes; for theory-leaning labs (control, learning), not necessarily.

US positions? NextApply lists selected US positions too (like the HIER humanoid lab above); funding there is typically via RA/TA appointments.

Building the portfolio that gets robotics interviews

Robotics hires on evidence of building. A minimal but effective portfolio before you apply:

  1. One complete robot project — simulated or physical — with a short video and a README explaining your design decisions. Hardware doesn't need to be expensive: a mobile base with a Jetson/Raspberry Pi and a clear task beats an unfinished arm.
  2. One systems repo — a ROS 2 workspace with tests and CI, showing you can write maintainable research code.
  3. One "depth" artefact — a report or repo reproducing a paper result (control, SLAM, learning-based manipulation), demonstrating you can read and re-implement.

Publish where labs look: GitHub with good READMEs, a one-page site, and links in your CV. Our full portfolio guide walks through three real examples.

Interview format in European robotics labs

  • 30–45 min research discussion: your thesis/project — expect "why did you choose X over Y?" depth.
  • Paper exercise: many labs send a paper beforehand and ask you to critique it.
  • Technical screening: kinematics, estimation or ML basics, calibrated to the group's field.
  • Fit conversation: supervision style, funding line, expected publications — ask about the lab's conference budget; well-funded labs pay for students to present.
  • Preparation mechanics (mock questions, STAR stories) are covered in our PhD interview guide.

    Visa and relocation quick facts

    • Germany/Netherlands/Sweden/Denmark: employed doctoral contracts carry standard work visas; universities sponsor and are practiced at it (typically 4–8 weeks).
    • Switzerland: doctoral assistant contracts are standard employment; permits are quota-managed but universities handle the process.
    • UK: CDT stipends come with student visas; dependants' rules changed recently — see our UK dependant visa guide if moving with family.
    • Funding during relocation: most contracts start paying from your official start date, so budget 4–6 weeks of arrival costs (deposit, first rent) — our PhD cost-of-living comparison helps you plan.
