Project Overview
About the Scholarship
The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme was established by the Hungarian Government in 2013 and has grown into one of the largest scholarship programmes in Europe. It is based on bilateral education agreements between Hungary and more than 80 partner countries and territories, and it supports tens of thousands of international students at the same time. For the 2027-28 academic year the programme again covers hundreds of full-time degree programmes at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, taught in English and in several other languages across Hungarian universities.
Successful applicants study tuition-free at a Hungarian higher education institution and receive a monthly stipend whose amount depends on the level of study. The award also includes a housing contribution or dormitory placement and full medical insurance under the programme's terms. Degrees obtained in Hungary are recognised across the European Union, and alumni communities in partner countries are actively supported after graduation.
How the Programme Works
Candidates apply online through the Tempus Public Foundation application portal and must also be nominated by the sending partner authority in their home country, which in most cases is the national ministry of education or higher education commission. After the application round closes, nominated files go to the chosen Hungarian universities, which run entrance examinations or interviews during the spring. Final decisions are announced through the sending partner and Tempus Public Foundation, and admitted students travel to Hungary for the academic year starting in September 2027.
