Programme Overview The Integrated Science Lab (IceLab) at Umeå University, jointly with several departments, offers three postdoctoral scholarships. Applicants apply to one or more of five proposed multidisciplinary projects. Each project's PIs select their top candidate, and an IceLab-internal committee selects the three most promising project-candidate pairs for funding.
Financial Coverage - Tax-free fellowship funded by Kempestiftelserna (Kempe Foundations). - Amount: 720,000 SEK over two years plus 75,000 SEK for research expenses. - Start between January and April 2027.
Five Projects
A. Sensing the breaking point: Cell wall integrity receptor in Chlorella vulgaris - Host: Department of Plant Physiology. Supervisors: Laura Bacete Cano, Christiane Funk. - Qualifications: PhD in computational biology, biophysics, mathematical biology, applied mathematics, or related quantitative field. - Focus: Build mechanistic model coupling wall chemistry, stiffness, and turgor pressure to receptor activation.
B. Decoding the Hidden Logic of RNA Polymerase Allocation Under Stress
- Host: Department of Molecular Biology. Supervisors: Ludvig Lizana, Kemal Avican.
- Qualifications: PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, physics, systems biology, or related field.
- Focus: Mathematical models of RNA polymerase competition in Yersinia pseudotuberculosis under stress.
C. Adaptive immunity as an evolutionary response to unforeseen stress
- Host: Department of Molecular Biology. Supervisors: Ryo Morimoto, Eric Libby.
- Qualifications: PhD in mathematics, physics, theoretical biology, computational biology, evolutionary biology, immunology, or related.
- Focus: Mathematical and computational models of adaptive immune evolution.
D. Multitrophic interaction networks as drivers of competitor coexistence under global change
- Host: Department of Physics. Supervisors: Magnus Neuman, Johan Olofsson.
- Qualifications: PhD in ecology, physics, computational science, applied mathematics, or related.
- Focus: Network-flow models for multilayer ecological networks using Mediterranean and Arctic biodiversity data.
E. From training load to adaptation: Modeling of stress, resilience, and performance in elite female athletes
- Host: Department of Community Medicine and Rehabilitation. Supervisors: Michael Svensson, Sara Sjöstedt de Luna.
- Qualifications: PhD in statistics, data science, computational biology, physics, or related quantitative discipline.
- Focus: Predictive models of human adaptation using longitudinal data from 86 elite cross-country skiers and biathletes.
Eligibility Criteria
- Doctoral degree or equivalent completed no later than decision date.
- Priority to candidates within three years of PhD. Special reasons may extend.
- Experience in data analytics, computational modeling, programming, mathematics, statistics, physics, molecular biology, microbiology, ecology, systems biology, or related.
