Project Description The Department of Diagnostics and Intervention at Umeå University offers a postdoctoral scholarship within the project "Identifying reversible components of dementia in patients with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus". The scholarship is full-time for two years with access from December 2026 at the latest.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is one of the few potentially reversible causes of dementia. This fellowship addresses whether combined physiological monitoring and advanced MRI can identify hemodynamic and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-related signatures that explain symptom reversibility and predict which patients benefit from shunt surgery.
Research Focus Using 4D flow MRI, BOLD-based cerebrovascular reactivity imaging, and complementary physiological monitoring, the fellow will investigate how cerebral blood flow regulation interacts with CSF dynamics before and after treatment. The aim is to develop objective markers that improve diagnostics, prognostics, and mechanistic understanding.
Opportunities - Gain in-depth expertise in advanced MRI sequences for cerebrovascular research. - Participate in method development of quantitative MRI protocols (4D flow, reactivity-based imaging).
- Develop independent research direction within reversible versus irreversible dementia mechanisms.
- Contribute to teaching and supervision at advanced level.
Eligibility Criteria
- Doctoral degree in biomedical engineering, medical science, medical physics, applied physics, neuroscience, computer science (with focus on physiological monitoring or medical imaging), or related discipline.
- Completed no later than decision date. Priority within three years of PhD; special circumstances may extend.
- Documented experience with MRI methodology and/or physiological monitoring in humans, preferably neuroimaging or cerebral circulatory applications.
- Experience in quantitative data analysis: signal processing, modeling, statistics, machine learning, or computational physiology.
- Excellent oral and written English communication.
