Project Overview
1-year tax-free postdoctoral scholarship in Discrete Mathematics at Umeå University. 375,000 SEK stipend. Start 1 April 2027. Apply by 9 Oct 2026.
Project Description The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University is offering a postdoctoral scholarship within the project "Bounds for Pancake Sorting and Analysis of the Pancake Graph". The scholarship is tax-free and amounts to 375,000 SEK for one year with starting date 1 April 2027 or by agreement. After the scholarship period, there is a possibility to apply for an extension.
The purpose is to pursue research in pancake sorting, a well-known problem in combinatorial optimization going back to a 1979 paper by Bill Gates and Papadimitriou. The project will study lower and upper bounds for both the unburnt and burnt versions and analyze the corresponding pancake graph. Specific research questions will be determined based on candidate's interests and expertise. The scholarship is funded and administered by the Kempe Foundation (JCSMK-0158).
Research Environment The project will be carried out in close collaboration with Associate Professor Gerold Jäger. The postdoctoral scholar will interact with the Discrete Mathematics group (20 researchers), which holds weekly seminars, hosts yearly workshops, and receives frequent international visitors. Research areas include extremal and probabilistic combinatorics, combinatorial optimization, graph theory, game theory, algorithmics, and geometry.
